Reading Group at the Wind Chimes Association
This program is designed for children in grades 2–3 who face reading challenges and have a love for animals. The sessions create a safe, warm, and non-judgmental environment, where children can read stories to animals – dogs, cats, rabbits, and even ducks – while experiencing a mutual emotional connection.
Program Purpose and Rationale
The Wind Chimes Reading Club aims to transform reading into a positive and empowering experience, while fostering emotional bonds with animals.
The non-judgmental environment allows children to:
- Improve their reading skills at their own pace with confidence.
- Build self-esteem and emotional resilience through small successes and supportive feedback.
- Develop empathy, patience, and sensitivity toward animals.
Who the Program Is For
- Children in grades 2–3 with reading difficulties or learning challenges.
- Children who have love and empathy for animals.
- Children who can benefit from a supportive, warm, and encouraging environment.
Session Structure
Each session includes three parts:
- Opening discussion – preparing the child for the session and boosting confidence.
- Reading and animal interaction – children read aloud to the animals while engaging gently with them, creating a positive and empowering reading experience.
- Closing and reflective discussion – discussing the experience, reinforcing self-confidence and personal growth, and processing the emotional connection with the animals.
