Group Therapy for Trauma Survivors
Why Group Therapy?
Living with PTSD can often feel like living in isolation.
Living with a secret, a life that is not always understood by those who haven’t experienced or endured trauma, and the reduction of social connections that follows PTSD.
Who better than animals can understand this?
A therapeutic group is a space where one can feel a sense of belonging.
Belonging to a group, a process, to the healing of the past, to new beginnings, to shared learning, and to feeling part of something larger.
What does group therapy with animals look like?
In our space, an animal rehabilitation environment, the animals are part of the group.
They can offer comfort, they can share their trauma stories in their own way, and they can give and request comforting touch.
Just like our patients, they too have their stories, and they too need a warm, nurturing space.
They, like our patients, have endured difficult experiences that have altered their lives and their ability to feel part of a pack, creating complexities in their daily functioning.
They understand very well how a small moment in daily life can easily trigger unbearable traumatic memories.
What does group therapy with animals involve?
- Together, our human group and our animal pack, allow us to address issues such as daily functioning, sleep difficulties, PTSD symptoms, social life, dealing with workplaces, anger, guilt, shame, body sensations, and more.
-
All of this, through a rehabilitative connection with the animals and their personal recovery stories.
Some will seek nourishment during our sessions.
Some will seek shared time together.
Some will request comforting touch.
And some, just like us, will choose not to participate at times.
They too have moods, and they too experience difficult moments and pleasant ones. -
The partnership between us—humans and animals—is one of healing power.
It allows for a new emotional and physical experience.
An experience based on shared moments of difficulty, and shared moments of hope.
