Two Hearts Together
Dog Adoption Support Program
A professional support program for people coping with post-trauma during the process of adopting a dog
The program is dedicated to the memory and inspiration of the dog Lev, for the love he sparked and the love he gave to everyone he met.
Program Purpose and Rationale
“Two Hearts Together” is designed to create a rehabilitative, reciprocal, and safe space in which both the person and the dog can support each other and accompany one another through a shared life while coping with human and animal post-trauma.
Individuals dealing with PTSD often struggle to form new, safe relationships and find it difficult to trust the world. At the same time, tens of thousands of dogs each year are seeking a safe home and a warm family. When two souls searching for warmth and security meet, a mutually beneficial bond of trust, love, and partnership can develop.
The program is built on the belief in the power of this beneficial connection and the therapeutic impact of a deep, reciprocal relationship on the emotional recovery process for both parties.
The rationale of the program is based on moving from the idea of a “therapy dog” to a shared therapeutic space, rather than a one-way use of one for the benefit of the other. In our approach, the most significant therapeutic aspect of the project is the mutually beneficial relationship between the human and the dog—a bond based on reciprocal rehabilitation that does not recreate harmful relationships from the past of either the human or the dog.
We recognize that alongside the excitement and joy of forming a new bond, the process of adding another soul to our home and life also comes with challenges, fears, and triggers. Therefore, the “Two Hearts Together” program provides professional emotional support and practical guidance in dog training throughout all stages of the process: from assessing the participant’s unique needs, to matching a suitable dog, to building daily routines and establishing the bond between them.
Program Tracks:
- Family Dog Adoption Track
- Adoption Track for Dogs in Training as PTSD Service Dogs
In both tracks, participants receive dual support:
- Trauma-informed emotional support – guidance, counseling, and support throughout the emotional and rehabilitative process.
- Dog training support – professional guidance in positive training methods.
Target Participants:
- The Family Dog Adoption Track is suitable for anyone seeking professional and emotional support in forming a reciprocal bond with a dog.
- The PTSD Service Dog Adoption Track is intended for individuals with single or complex post-traumatic stress, who have an official diagnosis and are actively engaged in treatment.
